Review: Tequila Tamer Sangrita

Tequila Tamer is a tomato-based sangrita produced in San Diego, California. You might be surprised how good this bottled sangrita is. Though some may argue that authentic sangrita contains no tomato juice, Tequila Tamer's flavor makes you forget all about the authenticity arguments. It has everything you want from a sangrita - it's sweet and spicy taste complements tequila ultimately enhancing your tasting experience.

Tequila Tamer is a nice deep red and you can see some pepper flakes in the mix. It is slightly more viscous than standard juice. It smells of equal parts tomato and sweet lime juice. When you take a sip, the tomato takes a back seat to the lime and pepper. The aftertaste is of lingering lime and it leaves a nice pepper burn on the tongue. Unlike another sangrita I recently tasted, Tequila Tamer is not overly sweet. It is nice and balanced with sweet, citrus and pepper. When you finish one you glass, you reach for the bottle and pour another.

Tequila Tamer Ingredients:
  • Tomato Juice
  • Lime Juice
  • Grenadine Syrup
  • Blue Agave Nectar
  • Potassium Sorbate
  • Red Pepper

Tamer Beverages also produces a product called Vodka Tamer.
Vodka has a similar flavor and scent as the Tequila Tamer but with cranberry juice as the dominant flavor. When you take a sip, the citrus juice and the peppers are again at the forefront with nice cranberry notes toward the end and then a pop of pepper at the back of the pallet.

If you are looking for a bottled sangrita, Tamer is more than worth a try. A 32oz bottle of Tequila Tamer retails for $9.95 and you can purchase it online from the Tamer Beverages store.
